One of the unique features of Aiko solar modules is the use of Shade Optimisation technology.

In this Product Spotlight, we’ll explain in simple terms what this technology is, and how it provides a significant tangible benefit for system owners.

If you want to learn more about Aiko technology and earn 20 CPD points, there is a new FREE training module in the Smart Installer Program by the Smart Energy Council. The course is called “Aiko Training & ABC tech - Chasing the Light - The Future is NOW” and is presented by Thomas Bywater.

What is Shade Optimisation technology?

Aiko solar modules consist of back-contact cells, meaning all of the electrical connections are on the back of the solar cell, leaving the front of the cell free from obstructions to collect the maximum amount of energy possible from the sun. Aiko uses an ultra-precise laser to etch electrical contacts in a ‘finger’ format onto the back of each cell.  The close proximity of these contacts, and the proprietary chemistry involved, enables the cells to operate in a very unique way.

When the sun is shining on a cell, it operates as expected, converting light photons into electrical current.  However, if an individual cell is shaded (and therefore not producing any electrical current) it doesn’t block the current being generated by other cells passing through it as a conventional solar cell would.  Instead, it goes into a ‘bypass' mode - allowing the current from other cells in the module that are exposed to light to pass through the shaded cell. This ultimately results in a module that generates more energy when it is partially shaded compared to conventional modules using TOPCon and PERC technology.

This “From Mystery to Mastery” article from Aiko, explains ABC Technology in full details.

What are the benefits of Shade Optimisation technology?

If any solar module is fully or mostly shaded, it will generate negligible power.  Aiko’s Shade Optimisation technology isn’t a miracle cure that allows modules to generate electricity in the shade but it can help a lot in patchy shade or soiling. In reality, most solar installations experience some degree of shading over their lifetime, either from soiling (leaves, bird droppings, mildew etc) or from external objects like vent pipes, chimneys or trees.

Independent tests carried out by TUV certified laboratories around the world have verified that the Shade Optimisation technology in Aiko solar modules results in increased energy production compared to conventional modules in a variety of ‘real-life’ shading situations. These independent tests have shown an increase in energy production from between 3% to 25% depending on the type and amount of shading.

Here are some documents that prove the shading optimisation technology developed by Aiko:

What does this mean for system owners?

Shade Optimisation can be thought of as a pre-paid insurance policy against shading.  If the system is not impacted by shade at all (or it is completely shaded) then Aiko panels will perform similarly to other high quality, high efficiency solar modules. However, if (or when!) the system is impacted by some amount of shading, the Shade Optimisation technology automatically activates to ensure the maximum possible power generation by each solar module.

More ways to optimise shaded solar systems:

Shaded sites often use technology like Enphase or SolarEdge to maximise energy output. These systems optimise how panels work together better as a system, whereas the Aiko technology enhance the performance of each individual panel. Combined, these solutions provide the best approach for safety, shade management, and energy yield.

In a nutshell

Aiko’s unique Shade Optimisation technology does not make solar panel ‘shade proof’, but it has been shown in independent tests conducted by TUV certified laboratories around the world to enable Aiko modules to significantly outperform conventional solar modules in real world partial shading situations – providing higher energy yield and faster return on investment. And the great news is that this technology is a free inclusion with the panels.
