Which Enphase IQ8 microinverter is best for each solar system?

The Enphase Energy IQ8 microinverter series represents the current state-of-the-art in AC Solar technology. In Australia, the IQ8 product lineup for 2025 consists of three models – IQ8AC, IQ8HC and IQ8X.

In this article we discuss the specifications of each of these inverters and explain which solar modules they are best matched with.

What are the differences between each Enphase IQ8 microinverter?

IQ8AC, IQ8HC & IQ8X microinverters are physically identical, with different electrical specifications

The IQ8AC, IQ8HC and IQ8X microinverters are all physically identical and offer comparable features, such as:

  1. High efficiency and reliability.
  2. Compatibility with all Enphase IQ system components.
  3. Grid-forming capabilities (when configured in a system with an IQ Battery).
  4. Interchangeability – every Enphase microinverter can be mixed and matched with different models within the same installation
The differences between the devices lie in the electrical specifications.

The IQ8AC and IQ8HC both have a maximum DC input voltage of 60 volts and a maximum DC input current rating of 14A, making them suitable for use with most commonly available solar modules.

The IQ8AC has a maximum AC output power rating of 360W, which (in accordance with Australian standards) means that it can be paired with modules up to 480W.  This microinverter is therefore ideal for use in most residential installations.

The IQ8AC has a slightly higher maximum AC output power rating of 380W, allowing it to be paired with modules up to 505W – making it suitable for use in both residential and small commercial installations.

Unlike the IQ8AC and IQ8HC, the IQ8X has a maximum DC input voltage of 79.5V.  This higher input voltage rating allows the microinverter to be used with modules such as the REC Alpha Pure X 460W panel which has higher output voltages (and lower input currents).

The IQ8AC is the lowest cost microinverter in the range, and it is ideal for use with modules in the 415 to 475W power range, so this is the model we recommend for most residential installations.

If a module rated between 475 and 505W is being used, then the IQ8HC is required.

Enphase provide a compatibility calculator to help determine the electrical compatibility of PV modules with the Enphase IQ Microinverter family. Simply enter your panel's specifications into the tool to find the right fit.

Important: Enphase microinverters should never be connected to a module that the calculator indicates is incompatible. A PV module must not exceed the maximum input DC voltage or maximum input current of the specific Enphase microinverter model, as doing so may result in sub-optimal performance or damage to the microinverter not covered under the product warranty.
